I started writing songs for this album in May or June of 2006 when I was living with my cousins in Napa Valley, CA. They were actually my grandpa's first cousins, which I guess makes them my cousins twice removed, but who's counting?
I wrote the first few songs up there, then wound up in Portland, OR, from Aug 2006 to May 2007, where the bulk of all these songs came together, including the participating musicians.
We couldn't get the right energy in a studio, so we decided instead to record most of the album live over two nights - one at a place called The Waypost in North Portland, and another at a place called Clinton Street Brewing in SE Portland.
A couple tracks were written later and finished in Minneapolis live in a big room with a handful of friends.
Needless to say, many people had a hand in the inspiration, the writing, and the recording of this album, and that feels very evident in the songs.
